FAQ - Attacks In Jakarta

29 Jan 2016

What is the background to the attacks in Jakarta?

On 14 January 2016, multiple explosions and gunfire were reported near the Sarinah Mall in central Jakarta, Indonesia, at the intersection of Jalan Kyai Haji Wahid Hasyim and Jalan MH Thamrin. Seven people (of which five are attackers) were killed and nineteen were injured in the attack. ISIL is suspected of being behind the attack. ISIL threatened that Indonesia would be targeted after the Paris attacks late 2015.

What is the effect on Jakarta’s economy ?

The attack was viewed as a battle of images and perceptions as it was an exchange of gunfire and explosions. Indonesia’s counterterrorism effort has had significant success over several years in degrading the capabilities of domestic militants to launch deadly attacks, creating a sense that the battle against Islamic militants was largely won. The attack was therefore perceived as an attempt to change that narrative.

Conditions in Jakarta returned to normal immediately after the attacks and the impact on financial markets was short-lived.
